What a registered agent costs, state by state
The cost has two parts that sites often blur. The provider’s price: $149 a year with Mainstay Filing, our best overall pick, the same at renewal. And the state’s fees: to change an agent, and the yearly or two-yearly report. Both are below, for each state.

Where the money goes
Start with state fees against agent fees, then the states ranked by the fee to change agents.
How much does a registered agent cost?
A registered agent service costs about $34.99 to $596 a year in year one, by published price. Mainstay Filing is $149 a year, the same at renewal.
Does the state charge for a registered agent?
Not for having one. The state charges to change one (nothing to $100) and, in most states, an annual or biennial report fee that is separate from the agent’s price.
Is the annual report fee part of the registered agent cost?
No. It goes to the state, and your agent does not pay it. $199 a year covers formation prepared and filed, the registered agent all year, the annual report prepared and filed, and the EIN application; state fees are passed through at cost.
